We do that with our worldview, the lens with which we view life. We interpret what is said and done through our own political ideas, our own theology, our own life philosophy and experiences and it becomes our thing. And it stops us zooming out and seeing the bigger picture - the truth that God in heaven came down and rescued mankind because of his great love for us.
Are you too zoomed in on science for example? I know many people are. I get an email once a week from someone who believes that science has disproved God. Now, let me be clear - I am a big fan of science, but if you zoom out just a little bit, then you will realise that if science has disproved God then you would never find a Christian Scientist anywhere in the world, yet the truth is a disproportionate number of scientists are Christians. That faith is the very reason a lot of people study science. When we zoom out we see a different picture, a bigger picture.
Maybe you are the other way around? Maybe you think science is from the devil and cannot be trusted. But the same argument applies, if that is true then you could not say a scientist and be a Christian. We need to zoom out. And when we do - Jesus can change your life. No doubt.
Are you too zoomed in on your point of view (ouch!), so convinced that you are right that you cannot see the point of view of the person next to you? Zoom out. Let God show you a bigger picture.
Are you too zoomed in on your lifestyle? You have found a way to live that works for you, and you are at the centre of it. But when you zoom out you see your selfishness? Or maybe it is the other way around, maybe you are so zoomed in on other people, on their needs, on what they think that you don't see the bigger picture, and your body is screaming to you to rest, to exercise, to be still and pray?
Are you so zoomed in on COVID that you are full of fear and anxiety? Is it time to stop, zoom out and see the bigger picture of God's grace and His ability to cope with your concerns and worries and still have a plan for your life?
I don't know - and the truth is that the last thing I want to do is try and give you some horoscope type approach, but I do want you to think. What's going on in your life at the moment? Where do you need to zoom out and see a bigger picture?
What about Jesus? What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He? Do you need to zoom out and see a bigger picture about who He really is?
