Right, let's get into this. So Sharon's put here, because we asked a question in the comments, how has the Holy Spirit intervened in your life? Or has the Holy Spirit intervened in your life? If so, how? And in what way has the Holy Spirit helped you? And I think these are really interesting questions. And I'll tell you why.
Okay. Today, I was having a conversation with a chap, just talking about his experience of church. And his comment to me was that he didn't, he doesn't know if he would call himself a Christian, because he's not really had an encounter with God, has not really encountered God in a significant way. And that's quite an interesting phrase, because when we talk about encountering God, that is the work of the Holy Spirit, right? So when you encounter God, that is the work of the Holy Spirit. And one of the things that I love about my Christian faith, is it, I can, you know, I can think about it all intellectually, right? So I can, I can go, Well, I can mentally, kind of get my head around some of the logic and the arguments and the assumptions of Christianity. So there's a mental engagement, which is good, it engages my brain, which is good. But it, but Christianity also engages me spiritually. And what I mean by that is, it's not just blind faith when you, I think, when you've lived, I want to say, as long as I have, you know, because I'll say it, me and Noah, we were mates. do you know what I mean? I've been around a while, and I've been a Christian well, you know, almost as long as Pete has been, I suppose, in some respects, but during the last 30 years of my Christian walk, I have experienced God, I have encountered God. And I was thinking about this conversation. I was thinking about it as I was driving earlier on, have I encountered God because I believe in God, or do I believe in God because I've encountered God? Do you get my my circular logic here? My circular argument? And I think the answer is yes to both questions that somehow, because I have believed I have encountered and because I have encountered I, my belief is stronger.
And so when we talk about the Holy Spirit intervening, when we talk about experiencing the Holy Spirit, when we talk about has the Holy Spirit helped you? These are really powerful and important questions, because Christianity is, is a religion that experiences God, as well as all the other things like say, the mental aspect of it, the logical aspect of it, the engagement of the brain, that all those sorts of things are great, but there is fundamentally an experience to Christianity, which we don't live for. And Mike talked about that in his video, didn't he? So we don't live for those things. But there is an experience to it, which I love.
So Sharon's put here in the comments. So just reading some of your comments here, which have been great Sharon's said, I tend to remember the more dramatic or significant experiences of the Holy Spirit though I expect he's involved in my life when I don't even realise. I expect so too, no doubt about it. He definitely guided me to move to Liverpool all those years ago and has come to me when I have been going through hard times. That is a really interesting point because Sharon talks about two things there, how the Holy Spirit guided her, and how the Holy Spirit has sort of comforted her. And these are two names which are used to describe the Holy Spirit. He's our helper and he's our comforter. And they were two things that Mike drew our attention to which I thought were fantastic. The Holy Spirit helps us and he comforts us, and one of the ways that people encounter God is when they are going through difficult or hard times, is they sense the presence and the comfort of God. That's quite an impressive thing really. And so that's one of the ways that people do encounter the Holy Spirit is through the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Love that. And He also guides us. So the Holy Spirit sort of guided Sharon to move to Liverpool all those years ago. Thank God he did.
So what else have we got going on here? Nicola's said I've had a lot of nudges from the Holy Spirit, often to start talking to someone. Sometimes I'm woken with a urge to pray for someone, often in the middle of the night, so what's Nicola talking about here? These are quite fascinating things aren't they again, just experiencing God and experiencing the Holy Spirit in different ways? Quite often, you know, the Holy Spirit is there to comfort us to build us up.
But also the work of the Holy Spirit is to work through us for and on behalf of other people. So Mike talked about this, you know, in terms of the Holy Spirit, giving him the power to pray. Nicola's put here, to start talking to people. Maybe the Holy Spirit nudges her. That's a really interesting phrase, isn't it? The Holy Spirit has nudged her, prompted her. She can't explain it. She just knows she has to talk to this person about this specific topic. They're quite interesting conversations to have.
I quite enjoy those conversations, no, let me preface that, I usually enjoy those kinds of conversations, if you've had those kind of conversations, and the Holy Spirit has sort of prompted you to do things, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about, because they're not always the easiest of conversations to have with people. But they are sometimes quite wonderful. There's no doubt about it. And so yeah, that, that's quite, I remember one time and I wrote this down in my notes, because I am an avid note taker when people are speaking. And so I took lots of notes when Mike was talking. And, you know, he was talking about when the people pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit, they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. No one was left out. That's an interesting phrase, isn't it? No one was left out, really, really thought that was fantastic. And he talked about various different people didn't he, different people groups that got filled with the Holy Spirit in the Bible, which I thought was fantastic. And it reminded me of one occasion when I was at, I was at a church doing a talk. And a guy walked in the middle of the service. And I just thought, he's just a little bit late, didn't pay any attention to it, carried on talking away. And he started off at the back and then slowly comes to the front during the church service. Now what happened was, is that during that service, he he laid down on the floor, right? I he doesn't know how he got there, but he ended up on the floor, he must have stayed there a good hour and a half, right? I can't explain it. Everyone just sort of carried on around him. He was fine. He was breathing. He was in a good place. And an hour and a half later, he woke up. And I said, Are you okay? And he said, Man, I have just experienced a feeling of love like I have never experienced it before right? This guy experienced as Mike talked about the love of God, the Holy Spirit who'd come upon him and he experienced the love of God. The fascinating thing to me in this whole story was that was the first time the guy had been into church. And he was not a Christian. Yet he walked into something. And for an hour and a half experienced love like he had never experienced before. I just assumed he was a Christian when he talked to me, he wasn't. And so that day he talks, he just basically said to me, how do I, how do I become a Christian? I was like, oh, my goodness, okay. Sure. Let me explain that to you. Because it's a really interesting phrase, isn't it?
Belief, encounter, encounter, belief. Just remember that circle, we need both things. The apostle Paul prayed this, he said, I pray, in the book of Ephesians, that you will know the length, the breadth, the depth, the width and the height of the love of God. When that he uses that word know, he means by experience that you would know and experience the love of God. And I pray for all of us. You know, all of us watching this either live or via catch up that we today will experience a love of God, that we would know his love, and that we will experience and encounter the Holy Spirit.
