Finding Peace When Your Mind Won't Stop

You know that feeling when your mind just won't shut up? When one anxious thought leads to another, and before you know it, you're spiralling? This Sunday at Crowd, Sharon Edmundson tackled this head-on, sharing her own journey with anxiety - from childhood fears to adult struggles - while unpacking some surprisingly practical wisdom from Philippians 4.

The Problem with "Just Don't Worry"

Here's something many of us have experienced - someone (often well-meaning) quotes, "Do not be anxious about anything" like it's a magic spell that should instantly calm our racing thoughts. But as Sharon pointed out, taking this verse in isolation can actually make things worse - adding guilt to our anxiety when we can't just "switch it off."

So, what's really going on in this passage?

Is there anyone either in the room or watching online who is accomplished at being anxious, or has anyone else got the anxiety gold medal, or was it just me?
— Sharon Edmundson

The Game-Changing Context

That famous "don't be anxious" verse? It actually starts with "The Lord is near." This completely changes the tone from a command to stop worrying to something more like a parent saying, "Don't worry, I've got you." It's not about suppressing anxiety - it's about knowing we're not facing it alone.

Three Practical Steps (That Actually Help)

  1. Acknowledge It
Instead of pretending everything's fine or trying to pray anxiety away, the first step is simply being honest about it. During Conversation Street, Matt and Jenny discussed how this openness with God (and ourselves) is crucial. The Bible's full of people pouring out their anxious hearts to God - we can too.

  2. Redirect It
The passage pairs anxiety with thanksgiving, not as a "good vibes only" kind of thing but as a practical tool for shifting our focus. When we're naming things we're thankful for, we're literally rewiring our brain's response to anxiety.

  3. Replace It
Sharon shared her lightbulb moment when she realised that she could actually choose what to think about. Not instantly or easily - she spent months training her mind to create new thought patterns. But eventually, those new patterns became natural.

The Bible tells us to take our anxieties to God because he’s a loving father who really cares.

The Peace That Doesn't Make Sense

One of the most intriguing parts of the discussion was about a peace that "surpasses understanding." We often think peace comes when everything's sorted. But this is different - it's a peace that shows up even when circumstances haven't changed.

Sharon shared about waiting for biopsy results - not exactly a peaceful situation. Yet, underneath the natural worry, there was a steady peace that didn't depend on knowing the outcome.

Questions This Raises

During Conversation Street, some really good questions came up:

  • How do we give our anxiety to God without taking it straight back?

  • What about decision-making anxiety?

  • How do we handle anxiety without adding spiritual guilt?

  • What's the role of Scripture in transforming thought patterns?

The answers weren't quick fixes, but they were real. Jenny shared how she visualises taking off a backpack of worries and giving it to God. Matt talked about the importance of understanding that transforming thought patterns is more like redirecting Niagara Falls than flipping a switch - it takes time and consistent effort.

I think sometimes you just need to make a decision and be really open to God. If I’m making the wrong one, [God] tell me and then just trust that he will and keep walking forward in it.
— Jenny Mariner

What Now?

If you're wrestling with anxiety, know that you're not failing at faith, and you're definitely not alone. God's invitation isn't to pretend everything's fine, but to bring our messy, anxious reality to Him.

The transformation might not be instant - it might look more like daily practice than a dramatic breakthrough. But there's hope, there's help, and there's a peace available that doesn't depend on having everything figured out.
