The Promise of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-11)

Here’s a summary of this week’s sermon:

  • The Book of Acts is a follow on from the Book of Luke, and both were written by Luke. In the book of Luke, we see what Jesus did and taught before he was taken into heaven. And in the Book of Acts, we see what Jesus did through his followers, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Jesus told them that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came on them and that their job was to be witnesses in Jerusalem and then gradually spread outwards until they covered every group of people on Earth.

  • The Holy Spirit is one of three persons who make up God (the Trinity) and he is not constrained by a physical body, so he can be with everyone at the same time.

  • Two roles of the Holy Spirit that we see in this passage are giving us power and helping us witness about Jesus.

  • The passage ends with Jesus being taken up into heaven in a miraculous way, and the promise that he will one day return in the same way.
