16: Learning to be Content

Today’s Guest: John Sloan

John was born and raised in Liverpool. He trained in surgery and emergency medicine, working in the UK NHS for 38 years as an A&E Consultant before retiring about 5 years ago. John is married to Myra, who is also a doctor, and they have 3 grown up children and 9 grandchildren. Currently they are co-leading the church plant, Frontline Wirral.

Here’s a summary of this week’s story:

  • John shares his early childhood experiences of growing up smoking at the age of 10 and how his mother's attitude towards prayers and faith turned him against God for many years.

  • While in University, John made the decision to follow Jesus but was unhappy because he did not want to live a holy lifestyle that was required of him. That was until he attended a meeting one day that turned his life around.

  • In 1985, John became the youngest surgeon in the country at 27 years old. In 1999, they set up New Hope Charity that continues to this day.

  • In 1991, in a town hall in Leeds, John felt God speaking to him, telling him that he would work in French-speaking Africa. In 1997, before starting the medical centre in Congo, he and his wife Myra began working in Guyana and then the Philippines, and Uganda. They now only work in Congo.

  • One of John's biggest challenges has been his difficult relationship with his mother. He has learned from this experience and is now able to help others who are facing similar challenges.

  • John quotes the title of his book, "5 Loaves and 2 Fishes" and says to take whatever you have and give it to God because it's incredible what God can do with it.
